Universitat Autònoma De Barcelona And MRC Harwell Collaborate On Exciting X-Ray Annotation Mouse Atlas

Published 19th March 2021

We’re excited to announce the release of a new and comprehensive X-ray Annotation Mouse Atlas! Researchers from two of our consortium members, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and MRC Harwell Institute, have collaborated on the project.

The IMPC and its consortium members adhere to standardised phenotyping protocols to produce high-quality data. We, along with other similar institutions, produce a massive number of X-ray images. Each image needs to be thoroughly analysed and annotated by researchers, enabling them to find phenotype differences. The X-ray Annotation Mouse Atlas provides an in-depth guide to mouse radiological skeletal anatomy. It is a great resource for early-career researchers looking to learn vital anatomical analysis skills or more experienced researchers looking to improve their observation and identification skills.

The atlas includes 152 X-ray images, 16 original drawings and 590 anatomical references. X-ray images were produced following an IMPC standardised phenotyping protocol, outlined in our IMPReSS pipeline resource, on C57BL/6N mice at 14 weeks of age.

The atlas also explores significant bone gender differences, including muscular processes, joints and pelvic region disparities.

“We sincerely hope that this atlas can become a useful tool to help technicians and researches to understand better the radiographic anatomy of the mouse skeleton.” – Dr Jesús Ruberte
